Book Look Tuesday

I've been trying to do a lot more reading lately- which I realize sounds funny coming from someone who works in a library- and so far, I've taken on some interesting stuff.

I haven't finished this one entirely yet, but I think that I may have to set it down for the time being until I'm up-to-date on a lot of the older films that he talks about. It is a relief that he refers to some techniques in newer movies inspired by these classics but it's really more beneficial if you've seen at least a fourth of the movies on the list. Unfortunately, I've only seen maybe a handful. Roger Ebert was one of the greatest and well-known critics of our times, and I think it very interesting to learn about the film critic himself from the movies that he recommends to highly. Not all of these are blockbuster hits. Some of them were actually poorly received; this surprises me because generally critic views weigh very heavily on what time considers to be a good movie. Notice that the majority of people know movies from the 30s and 40s because of the awards they won and because critics say it was fabulous.

There's a few little gems from Ebert that made we chuckle as I read them....

"Vampirism is like elegant, slow motion rape done politely by a creature who charms you into surrender" ( as he discusses Bela Lugosi in Dracula )

I wonder what he would think of the vampire craze today.
