A coworker told me an interesting story today that both baffled and disgusted me at the same time.
I had been going through the mail, and unfortunately at the library whenever we get mail back from someone's address we have to go into their accounts and make a note to verify their physical address the next time they come in. So, I stumble across one that's already been marked as needing verification (which doesn't happen often) and there was a note in the account saying that this particular person should speak to my supervisor and that the fines on the record were valid and NOT to be taken off.
This perked my curiosity. I decided to ask my supervisor what all the beef was on the account; I thought it would be good information to know in case they walked in and my supervisor wasn't there. The story I got sounded like more fiction than fact, but it just goes to show you that reality is sometimes weirder than make-believe.
The patron had talked to my supervisor and explained that they were upset that the library kept sending them these notices regarding lost books and library materials on the account. They felt like they should not have to be responsible for the items and wanted them cleared so that they may check more items out and use the other library privileges. Well, at the library we do not take lost material fines lightly, and my supervisor explained to them that once the items were returned then the fine would be considerably lower (it was well over $200) and that they may use the library services again, but not before. The patron stated they did not have the items anymore. When my supervisor asked why, the patron claimed that they had thrown the library materials into the dumpster. Completely dumbfounded by this answer, my shocked supervisor asked them why they would do that.
The patron said, "I didn't want them anymore, and that was the fastest way I could be rid of them. The books were full of evil."
Many of the items were related to wicca and tarot readings.
I live in the panhandle of Texas which is right smack in the middle of the Bible Belt, but SERIOUSLY GUYS! REALLY? Who just throws away library books like it's no big deal?
First of all, it's public property.
Second of all, how more intolerant can you get?
Third of all, how stupid can you be to admit to it to the library and then demand that we agree you were justified in your actions?
I can't decide if I should cry or laugh about it all.
In other news, I'm watching Naruto. I'm in episode 8 and there are so many cheater ' Jutsu(s) ' that I'm surprised any ninja can kill any other ninja.... let alone win a ninja battle. I mean, just by effectively combining the Clone Jutsu, Substitution Jutsu, and some standard ninja martial arts. You're practically invincible.
And yet, I'm still watching because Kakashi Hayate just too cool.
